In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to look after his flock of rams.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the gales across the single tree on the peak were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.
Tales of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village yelling here “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but found nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. However, one day, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is tough to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
